Description: Observation and assessment are at the heart of effective teaching in early childhood classrooms. This training explores how educators can intentionally observe, document, and interpret children’s learning to better understand their development, interests, and needs. Participants will examine a range of assessment methods and learn how to use authentic observation data to guide responsive curriculum planning for both individual children and groups. Through practical strategies and real-world applications, this training also highlights how effective documentation such as objective observations and portfolios—can be used to track progress, communicate growth, and strengthen overall program quality.
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
- Interpret authentic observation and assessment data to inform responsive curriculum planning for individual children and groups.
- Apply effective documentation strategies, including objective observation techniques and portfolio development, to demonstrate children’s progress and program effectiveness.
- Analyze and differentiate between various types of assessments (authentic, formative, summative, and diagnostic) to determine how each supports children’s development and instructional decision-making.
