Description: This course equips educators to create inclusive, language-rich environments where children learning two languages can thrive. Participants will explore the natural stages of dual language acquisition, understand the role of code-switching and why it is a strength rather than a barrier, and learn scaffolding strategies that support comprehension and expression without replacing a child's home language. The course also emphasizes building authentic partnerships with families to honor and integrate the languages and cultures children bring into the classroom.
By the end of this course, you will be able to…
- Recognize the stages of dual language acquisition and how language development progresses across both a child's home language and English.
- Analyze the role of code-switching in language development and how it supports communication, learning, and cognitive growth in dual language learners.
- Apply scaffolding strategies and family engagement practices to create inclusive, language-rich environments that support dual language learners while honoring their home languages and cultures.
